In high school I was the sort of person who believed that the type of music, movies (I probably called them films), and books I liked said something significant about who I was as a sentient being.
I was the worst.
Somehow, in spite of the fact that I thought it was hella cool to act like a pretentious twat, the song I remember soundtracking the summer between my sophomore and junior year was Sugar Ray‘s “When It’s Over”.
God only knows what I told myself in order to justify liking such a lamestream hit, but it somehow ended up on just about every mix CD I made for a good six months. In all likelihood I played the ‘so bad, it’s good’ card. Yet I’ve always genuinely liked this song and still have a soft spot for the descending harmonies on the “go, go, go” part of the pre-chorus.
I’m convinced my paradoxical relationship with “When It’s Over” is what led me to having Mark McGrath-esque two-toned hair my senior year. Well it probably had something to do with our entire soccer team bleaching their hair for the state tournament, which led to me looking like this (#3):
The two-tone hair came about because I was so fucking indie I cut my own hair (like I said, I was the worst) and botched it so bad that I had to go to a real barber to salvage it. Sadly I don’t have any pictures of me with my two-toned wafu at my disposal, but I vow to find some and update this post to its proper glory…
Anyhow, speaking of McGrath, before we get to the song let’s take a moment and enjoy Chris Paul big-timming him during last year’s playoffs.
The best part of this GIF is pinpointing the exact moment Mark realizes his dap won’t be requited and tries to play it off.”Just a fan clapping here. Nothing to see. Move along.”
Which basically mirrored my reaction anytime someone caught me singing along to “When It’s Over” back in the day.
